What is GEO? How to get your business cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

Generative engine optimization (GEO) explained: how AI assistants choose sources, and the practical steps to make your business easier to find, understand and cite.

Key takeaways
  • GEO (generative engine optimization) makes your content easy for AI assistants to find, understand and cite.
  • It builds on SEO: crawlability, clear entities, structured data, direct answers and consistent brand facts.
  • Nobody can guarantee an AI recommendation, but you can control the signals AI systems rely on.

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your website and brand easy for AI-powered search tools, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot, to find, understand and cite in their answers. It is sometimes called AI search optimization or LLM SEO.

Why does GEO matter now?

More people ask AI assistants for recommendations and explanations before they visit a search results page. When an assistant answers "which agency builds Webflow sites for SaaS companies?" or "how do I fix a slow Shopify store?", it draws on pages it can access and trust. If your site is hard to crawl, vague about what you do or inconsistent across the web, you are less likely to be part of that answer.

How do AI assistants choose sources?

Each system works differently, but the patterns are similar. AI search tools retrieve pages from a search index or their own crawler, then summarize them. They favour sources that are accessible, clearly structured, specific and consistent with other sources. Pages that answer a question directly, in plain language, are easier to quote than pages that bury the answer in marketing copy.

Practical GEO checklist

1. Let AI crawlers in

Check your robots.txt. If you want to appear in AI answers, do not block crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Make sure important content is in the HTML, not only rendered by JavaScript after load.

2. Define your entity clearly

Write one clear sentence that says who you are, what you do and who you serve, and use it consistently on your homepage, About page, social profiles and directories. For example: "Soft IT Land is a US-registered software and web development agency." Consistency helps both search engines and language models connect the facts about your business.

3. Add structured data

Use JSON-LD schema that matches what is visible on the page: Organization with your logo and social profiles, Person for founders and authors, Service for service pages, Article for posts, FAQPage where you show FAQs, and BreadcrumbList. Never mark up content that is not on the page.

4. Write answer-first content

Use question-style headings that match how people ask ("How long does a website migration take?") and answer in the first one or two sentences, then add detail. Short, self-contained paragraphs are easier to quote accurately.

5. Show real expertise

Name the people behind the business, link to their profiles, show real projects and explain your process. Specific, first-hand detail is more useful to readers and to AI systems than generic claims.

6. Keep facts consistent everywhere

Your company name, description, services, contact details and founders should match across your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile (if you have one) and directories. Conflicting facts make it harder for any system to trust them.

7. Help discovery

Keep an accurate XML sitemap, submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and use IndexNow to notify Bing and other participating engines when pages change. Bing's index matters because several AI assistants use it.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file that summarizes your site for large language models. It is optional and Google Search does not use it, but it is quick to add and can help some AI tools understand your key pages. Treat it as a nice extra, not a ranking factor.

How do I measure GEO?

Ask the main assistants the questions your buyers ask, record which sources they cite and how they describe your business, and repeat monthly. Watch referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics. Results vary between sessions, so look for trends rather than single answers.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO builds on SEO. Crawlable pages, good information architecture, fast performance, structured data and helpful content are the foundation for both. GEO adds extra focus on clear entities, direct answers and consistency.
