Website redesign SEO checklist: how to relaunch without losing rankings

A step-by-step SEO checklist for website redesigns and migrations: URL inventory, 301 redirect map, metadata, staging rules, launch-day checks and monitoring.

Key takeaways
  • Most traffic lost after a redesign comes from missing redirects and dropped metadata.
  • Inventory every URL before you change anything, then map each one to its new home with a 301.
  • Block staging from indexing, run a launch-day checklist and watch Search Console for weeks after.

Why do redesigns lose rankings?

Redesigns usually lose traffic because URLs change without redirects, valuable content or metadata is dropped, or the new site is slower or harder to crawl. All of these are preventable with planning. A careful redesign can improve rankings, because it fixes old technical problems.

Before you design anything

  1. Crawl the current site and export every URL, title, meta description, H1, canonical and status code.
  2. Export performance data from Google Search Console (pages and queries) and your analytics, so you know which pages earn traffic and links.
  3. List pages with backlinks using Search Console's Links report or an SEO tool.
  4. Record the baseline: traffic, rankings for key terms and Core Web Vitals.

Plan the new structure

Keep URLs that already perform well where you can. When a URL must change, decide its new destination now. Merge thin or duplicate pages into stronger ones rather than deleting them outright. Make sure every important page from the old site has an equivalent on the new one.

Build the 301 redirect map

Create a spreadsheet with two columns: old URL and new URL. Map one-to-one to the most relevant page, not everything to the homepage. Use permanent 301 redirects, avoid redirect chains, and include variants such as trailing slashes, http, www and old file extensions like .php or .html.

Carry over content and metadata

  • Write a unique title and meta description for every page.
  • Keep one clear H1 per page and a logical heading structure.
  • Preserve or improve the content that ranks today.
  • Keep image alt text and add it where it was missing.
  • Rebuild internal links to point straight at new URLs.
  • Add structured data (Organization, Service, Article, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage where relevant).

Staging rules

Keep the staging site out of search results with password protection or a noindex header, and make sure that block is removed at launch. Test speed, mobile layout and forms on staging before launch day.

Launch-day checklist

  • Remove staging noindex and password protection.
  • Check robots.txt allows crawling.
  • Test a sample of redirects, including your top traffic pages.
  • Confirm canonical tags point to the live domain.
  • Publish an updated XML sitemap and submit it in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Verify analytics, conversion tracking and forms.
  • Check one host is canonical (www or non-www) and HTTPS is enforced.

After launch: monitor and fix

For the following weeks, watch Search Console for crawl errors, 404s and indexing changes, and fix problems quickly. Some ranking movement in the first weeks is normal while search engines process the changes. Compare traffic and rankings with your baseline and look at which pages lost or gained.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Redirecting every old URL to the homepage.
  • Launching with the staging noindex still in place.
  • Removing pages that earn links or traffic without a redirect.
  • Changing the domain, design and content all at once without a plan.
  • Shipping a heavier, slower site than before.
