- Most Google Ads lead campaigns optimize for form fills; importing which leads became customers lets bidding optimize for real business.
- Offline conversion import sends back the click ID (GCLID) you saved with the lead; enhanced conversions for leads adds hashed contact details for better matching.
- Capture the GCLID and the lead's details at form submission, store them in your CRM, and import conversions when the deal stage changes.
- Hash contact data with SHA-256 after normalizing it, collect consent where required, and plan for Google's move of uploads to the Data Manager API.
How do you tell Google Ads which leads became customers?
Save the Google click ID (GCLID) and the lead's contact details when the form is submitted, store them in your CRM, and import a conversion back into Google Ads when that lead becomes qualified or turns into a sale, using enhanced conversions for leads to add hashed contact data for better matching. Without this step, a lead campaign can only optimize for form fills, including spam and poor-fit enquiries. With it, automated bidding learns which clicks turn into real business.
This is one of the first things we set up in our Google Ads management for service and B2B businesses.
Why are form fills not enough?
A form submission tells Google that someone filled in a form, not that they were a good customer. Some leads are spam, some are job seekers, and some are simply the wrong size or location. When bidding optimizes only for form fills, it can find more of the cheap, low-quality ones. Feeding back later stages, such as qualified lead or closed deal, shifts optimization towards the people who actually buy.
What is offline conversion import?
Google Ads creates a unique Google Click ID (GCLID) for every ad click to your site. With offline conversion import, you save that GCLID with the lead, and when the lead converts outside the website you send the GCLID back to Google Ads with details of the conversion (Google Ads help: offline conversion imports). It works for calls too, so you can see which ads and keywords drive sales calls.
What do enhanced conversions for leads add?
Google describes enhanced conversions for leads as an upgraded version of offline conversion import. The flow is (Google Ads help: enhanced conversions for leads):
- A visitor clicks your ad and fills in a form on your website.
- Your website sends Google hashed lead information.
- You store the lead information in your CRM.
- When the lead converts, for example becomes a customer, you import the same hashed lead information, usually alongside identifiers such as the GCLID.
The hashed contact details help Google match the conversion to the original ad interaction even when the click ID is missing.
How should contact data be hashed?
Enhanced conversions use the SHA-256 one-way hashing algorithm. You can send data and let Google normalize and hash it, or hash it yourself. If you hash it yourself, normalize first: trim spaces, use lowercase, format phone numbers in E.164 format, and remove periods before the domain in gmail.com and googlemail.com addresses (Google Ads help: about enhanced conversions). Matching fails silently when normalization differs, so test with a few known records.
How do you connect your CRM?
- Capture: add hidden form fields that store the GCLID from the landing page URL, and send it to the CRM with the lead's details.
- Define stages: decide which CRM stages count as conversions, such as qualified lead and closed won, and create a conversion action for each in Google Ads.
- Add values: send a deal value or an agreed value per stage, so bidding can tell a large customer from a small one.
- Import: use a direct integration where your CRM has one, such as HubSpot's Google Ads connection, a scheduled upload, or an automation that sends conversions when a stage changes.
- Monitor: check the conversion diagnostics in Google Ads for match rates and upload errors.
Our HubSpot and analytics work covers the form fields, CRM properties and connection.
What about privacy and consent?
Hashing protects the data in transit, but it does not remove the need for transparency. Update your privacy policy to explain that hashed contact details may be shared with advertising partners to measure campaigns, and collect consent where the law requires it, for example from visitors in the European Economic Area. Use Google's consent tools on the website so tags respect each visitor's choice.
What is the Data Manager API change?
Google states that from June 15, 2026, offline conversion import and enhanced conversions for leads uploads move to the Data Manager API and are blocked in the Google Ads API (Google Ads help: enhanced conversions for leads). Integrations built on the old upload endpoints need updating; CRM connectors and uploads through the Google Ads interface are managed by those tools.
What is the simplest way to start?
- Make sure basic conversion tracking for form submissions and calls works.
- Capture the GCLID and contact details on every lead form, and store them in the CRM.
- Turn on enhanced conversions in Google Ads and choose your import method.
- Import one stage first, such as qualified lead, and check match rates.
- Add closed deals and values once the first import runs reliably.
Combined with a sensible budget, as covered in our guide to a starting Google Ads budget, this is how lead campaigns move from counting enquiries to counting customers.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a CRM to use enhanced conversions for leads?
You need somewhere that records which leads became customers, and a CRM is the usual place. HubSpot, Salesforce and similar tools can store the click ID and stage changes, and some connect to Google Ads directly. A spreadsheet can work for very small volumes, but it is easy to forget and hard to keep accurate.
Which conversions should I import?
Import the stages that matter for your business, such as a qualified lead and a closed deal, as separate conversion actions with values where you can. Bidding works best when the main goal still happens often enough to learn from, so you may optimize for qualified leads while also reporting on closed deals.
Is it allowed to send customer emails to Google?
Enhanced conversions use hashed data, so Google receives a one-way SHA-256 hash rather than the readable email or phone number. You still need a privacy policy that explains this, and consent where the law requires it, such as for visitors in the European Economic Area under Google's EU user consent policy.
What changed with the Data Manager API?
Google announced that from June 15, 2026, offline conversion import and enhanced conversions for leads uploads move to the Data Manager API and are blocked in the Google Ads API. If an older custom integration uploads conversions through the Google Ads API, it needs updating. Direct CRM integrations and the Google Ads interface handle this for you.
